How to find where the draught is coming from

Before making any adjustments, it is a good idea to identify exactly where the cold air is entering. 

On a windy day, carefully run your hand around the edges of the closed window and feel for chilly draughts. Pay particular attention to the corners, the hinges and the side of the window around the window lock. 

You can also try the piece of paper test. Close the window on a piece of paper so it is held between the sash and frame. If the paper pulls out easily, the seal may not be providing enough compression. 

Can you adjust uPVC window hinges yourself?

Yes, minor hinge adjustments can sometimes improve the seal around a uPVC window. Friction hinges allow the sash position to be altered, with an Allen key commonly used for this type of adjustment. 

Adjusting the hinges

Open the window and look for adjustment screws on the hinges. Make small changes rather than turning the screws too far in one go. 

Depending on the hinge design, these adjustments can alter the sash position or compression. If the sash has moved out of proper alignment, adjusting it can help the window sit more evenly against the frame. 

After each adjustment, close the window and check that it operates smoothly and that the sash sits evenly against the seals. 

If the height of the window appears uneven, the sash has dropped noticeably or the window requires excessive force to close, it may be better to have an expert assess it. 

Check the locking mechanism

Inspect the window seals

If the hinges and locking mechanism appear to be working correctly, check the window seals. 

Rubber seals and gaskets can become hard, cracked, flattened or damaged through natural wear. Once they have deteriorated, adjusting the hinges will not necessarily solve the problem. 

Check the full length of the seal around the sash for obvious gaps or sections that have come away from the frame. If the seal is damaged, replacing it with a suitable new seal can help create a tighter seal and reduce draughts.
